What is Effective Altruism (EA) at UC Berkeley?

A community for UC Berkeley students to connect to peers, mentors, and resources in solving the world’s most pressing problems, effectively.

Effective Altruism (EA) is a global movement, and Effective Altruism at UC Berkeley is a student organization under the Center for Effective Altruism

How can I get involved?

Join our community: Join our Slack and drop by our weekly meetings and events!

We encourage you to introduce yourself to an executive board member during an event or by scheduling a time with us. We all have varying experiences within EA, as well as connections to the broader community, so we’re happy to direct you to resources and keep in touch. Learn more:

Take action:

Check out our Workflows (can be filtered by cause area, major, or interests) to learn.

Workflows are an alternative and self-paced version of an intro reading group that lets someone jump straight to the area that they are interested in to get the basics of it while also providing the option to meet with group organizers, get personalized feedback & suggestions as to how to get involved with projects.

If you’re ready to tackle a high-impact, independent project directly (we HIGHLY encourage this), apply to be sponsored by us on our Project form. Feel free to reach out to our officers for support, resources, or feedback.

Check out the resources section of this page, and some examples (coming up soon) of projects on our Projects page! We’re also setting up project coworking meetups every week (time TBD).

If you’re interested in helping organize EA UC Berkeley, let one of the executive board members know!

I feel alienated, help

Members of our community come from vast backgrounds, with varying prior experiences in EA. With the vast wealth of cause areas and information, it’s understandable to feel intimidated! On the path to high-impact, imposter syndrome is commonly felt. Whether you’ve just heard of EA today or have been in this community for years, we want you to feel supported. We encourage you to ask members to explain jargon or complex ideas.

I feel like I don't belong, help

We aim to build an inclusive, fruitful community, and we take community health and DEI concerns seriously. We’d love to hear from you how we can do better, or if you’re experiencing any issues. Fill out our anonymous feedback forms linked in our executive board’s bios, and feel free to check out th DEI section of our resources page. Please also feel free to bring up feedback, suggestions, and concerns related to DEI with Carolyn (Vice President).

Are we a religious organization?

No, we are not. We welcome people of all religious backgrounds and lack thereof.

I have a question that isn’t listed here.

Feel free to email admin@eaberkeley.com.
