  • Jeremy Pan — Co-President

Hi, I’m Jeremy, a sophomore at Berkeley pursuing degrees in Economics and Statistics. I was introduced to EA my first semester through the Econ DeCal and got my first hands-on experience with EA through volunteer projects. Compared to previous volunteer work, what I did through EA felt as if I was contributing towards good on an even larger scale, which very much piqued my interest.

I'm still developing my understanding of EA by meeting new people, reading posts/forums, and helping organize for the club: there is no such thing as “learning too much ;)”. My main goal is to help highly motivated people find a high impact topic that they can work in. I'm still looking for mine - it's an insightful journey that definitely requires time and help from other people!

In my free time, I love to discover new places to eat food, listen to hip-hop, and contemplate life and purpose (sometimes all of the above at once!). I’m always down to chat about anything from EA to academics to music!

  • Mario Fontes

    Mario Fontes - Co-President

Hey everyone! I’m Mario, a senior studying Civil Engineering with a focus on energy at UC Berkeley. I’m originally from Mexico! At EAB, I focus on community outreach and am super excited to get more people involved in EA. Please reach out with any questions, I’m always happy to help.

I strive to understand the social, political, legal, and economic factors playing into different problems and systems in order to maximize good, minimize harm, and create opportunity through my work. When I’m not studying or doing research, I’m learning about science communication, positive psychology, exploring ideas like asteroid mining and a functioning high-speed rail network in the US (my bet’s on asteroid mining coming first), and going mountain biking, kayaking and freediving.

  • Prakrat Agarwal - Forecasting Division

Hi! I’m Prakrat, a sophomore studying Applied Math and CS. I was largely introduced to EA principles by my roommate, and then by attending the club’s general meetings. I was introduced to Forecasting when I attended OPTIC (forecasting competition) and Manifest (forecasting conference) and I am really excited to introduce the idea to more people while learning more about the space personally.

In my free time, I like to play table tennis and frisbee, have ethical debates, and go on hikes. I love Mediterranean, Mexican, Indian, and Thai food and am always open to trying out new spots! Recently I’ve been trying to learn how to DJ and also getting back at making origami models.

  • Ian Habich - Events and Operations

Hi there! I'm Ian, a freshman studying math here at UC Berkeley. I first learned about EA in sophomore year of high school, when I stumbled upon a post from 80000hours.org about the world's most pressing problems. Making the world better is incredibly important to me, so you can imagine how happy I was to learn that a thriving community of thoughtful, open-minded altruists already exists! I wanted to get involved, so I joined EA Claremont, my hometown's nearest EA club. Now that I'm here at Berkeley, I'm excited to work even more at having an impact!

Most of the projects I've been involved in over the past few years relate to AI safety, animal welfare, and non-profit entrepreneurship, but it's hard to find something I'm not interested in. My interests outside of school include philosophy, constructed languages, operating system design, and all other areas of human knowledge.

  • Carolyn Qian - Advisor

Hi! I’m Carolyn, and I’m a senior at UC Berkeley studying math. I started learning about EA in freshman year (80K, Forum, etc) and became much more invested in it. The movement inspires me to dream bigger and prioritize social impact in my life and career planning, and thats’s why I’m excited to cultivate this community at Cal. (I’ve been organizing with EA Berkeley for almost a year and a half!) Please feel welcome to reach out to say hi.
Misc about me - Recently, I’ve been interested in exploring infosecurity for emerging technologies, such as AI. I’m like a grandma so I really enjoy mornings and mellowish things — hiking, reading, meditating. Trees are one of my favorite things ever!

I studied philosophy, comparative literature, am a proud vegan, and a massive music nerd. I’m actively involved in the effective altruism and AI safety community, like helping out EA Berkeley,  cofounding Caltech AI Alignment and running Stanford EA. I represented Malaysia for the 2019 International Philosophy Olympiad, and subsequently founded a critical thinking nonprofit at 20 as a Davis Fellow.

  • Jemima Jones - Advisor

Hey everyone! I'm Jemima, I graduated from university in the UK a few months ago and I'm now on the University Groups Team at the Centre for Effective Altruism. I run our Organiser Support Programme, which co-ordinates mentorship for almost 100 EA group organisers across the world and provides resources and planning templates. UC Berkeley is one of the groups I mentor directly!
